Artist Statement

I am a multi-disciplinary artist creating artwork to celebrate the intricacies, and diversities inherent in femininity, to challenge inequality inherent in prevailing societal conventions and expectations, to advocate, to enlighten, and to invite contemplation and dialogue. My work delves into the identity of the female experience, employing the medium of printmaking at the intersections of 2D and 3D art.

The fearless exploration of identity, gender, and the human experience created by artists such as Cindy Sherman, Kelly Reemtsen, Frida Kahlo, and Barbara Kruger inspires me to delve deeper into my research and creative expression. Taking clues from Frida Kahlo’s self-portraits demonstrates the power of vulnerability in art. Cindy Sherman’s ability to challenge and change societal norms through self-expression energizes my courage. Kelly Reemtsen’s portraits show me what it means to be a modern woman, and Barbara Kruger demonstrates how art can be a vehicle for activism and advocacy. Sculpture artists like Ann Weber and Raya Sader Bujana inspire material experimentation and investigation of storytelling through my sculptural work.

Using vibrant shapes and symbols meticulously cut from hand-printed papers, I craft my artwork through collage, infusing the work with metaphor, rhythm, and movement. My intricate 2D canvases and 3D sculptural pieces emerge from hand-printed Monoprint paper, characterized by intense, saturated colors. By interweaving countless similar shapes, I construct compositions in unexpected and novel color palettes.

Upon closer inspection, the viewer can discern the painstaking craftsmanship in each finished piece—a testament to the time dedicated to printing, cutting, scoring, folding, and meticulously assembling hundreds of individual components. The creative process itself holds equal significance to the final artwork. Serving as an extension of my psyche—a conduit for expressing my emotions, experiences, and thoughts through the repetitive act of creation, putting together the whole from the individual pieces. This orientation to detail and repetition lends a meditative quality to the work, reflective of the healing and joyful moments invested in its making.

In its entirety, my artwork stands as an expression of the pain and joy within the intricacies and diversities inherent in identifying as female. Concurrently, it takes on the role of challenging prevailing societal norms and expectations, inviting contemplation and dialogue.

In the future, I aspire to expand my artistic practice by experimenting with new mediums and exploring the intersections of feminine identity, and societal change. I am excited to embark on collaborative projects and continue my research into the evolving role of art as a catalyst for activism and advocacy. My journey as an artist is an ongoing exploration to push the boundaries of my creativity to contribute to discussions addressing important social issues.
